ReSTOR multifocal IOL enables many to be glasses-free after cataract surgery

The AcrySof ReSTOR multifocal IOL (Alcon) enables over 87 percent of patients to be glasses-free after cataract surgery when implanted in both eyes. That’s the finding of researchers in France and Spain who conducted a study of 304 patients with an average age of 65.6 years who underwent bilateral implantation of the multifocal lens.

New multifocal IOL approved

Abbott (Des Plaines, Ill.) announced last week it has received FDA approval for its new one-piece Tecnis Multifocal IOL for cataract patients with and without presbyopia. Also, the new multifocal IOL has received “presbyopia-correcting IOL” status by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), giving Medicare beneficiaries the option to receive the Tecnis Multifocal IOL during cataract surgery for an additional fee to cover the extra cataract surgery cost.

Implantation of the Zeiss Acri.LISA 366D multifocal IOL (Carl Zeiss Meditec, Jena, Germany) in both eyes during cataract surgery produces a full range of vision and satisfactory visual acuity at all distances for patients with pre-operative hyperopia, according to a new study by researchers at the University of Oviedo School of Medicine in Oviedo, Spain.
