Toric ICL effectively corrects myopia and astigmatism

July 28, 2010

A specially designed phakic IOL called a toric implantable collamer lens (toric ICL) effectively corrects both myopia and astigmatism, according to a new study. In this month’s issue of Clinical & Experimental Ophthalmology, researchers in New Zealand report the results of a 12-month study of 77 eyes with moderate to high myopic astigmatism that were implanted with the toric ICLs by a single refractive surgeon.

AcrySof Cachet phakic IOL shows long-term safety and effectiveness

July 26, 2010

The AcrySof Cachet phakic IOL (Alcon Inc, Hünenberg, Switzerland) provides predictable outcomes and safe and effective correction of moderate and high myopia for a period of four years. Speaking at the recent annual meeting of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, eye surgeon Stephen S. Lane, MD, (Associated Eye Care, Stillwater, Minn.) reported this finding after four years of follow-up in a phase II FDA clinical trial of the new phakic IOL.

Phakic IOL implantation produces quality of life improvements

July 23, 2010

Implantation of a popular phakic IOL for the correction of high myopia produces significant patient satisfaction among those undergoing the procedure.
That is the finding of researchers in the United Kingdom who designed a study to investigate changes in vision-related quality of life after implantation of a popular phakic IOL called the Visian Implantable Collamer Lens, or Visian ICL (STAAR Surgical, Monrovia, Calif.)

Refractive surgery safe, effective for eyes with strabismus

July 21, 2010

People with misaligned eyes (strabismus) can safely have refractive surgery and expect excellent results. That’s the finding of a new study that evaluated the effect of LASIK, LASEK and phakic IOL implantation to correct refractive errors in eyes with esotropia and exotropia.

Artiflex phakic IOL found safe, effective for treatment of moderate to high myopia

June 23, 2010

Phakic intraocular lens (phakic IOL or PIOL) implantation appears to be a safe and predictable vision correction procedure for moderate to high myopia, according to a new study published in this month’s issue of Journal of Refractive Surgery.

Late LASIK flap dislocations are rare, but possible

June 17, 2010

Traumatic dislocations of LASIK flaps, though rare, can occur years after the vision correction surgery. That’s the take-home message of the report of two cases of traumatic LASIK flap dislocations published in Journal of Refractive Surgery.

Toric phakic IOL provides better night driving vision than PRK

June 1, 2010

An implantable phakic IOL designed to correct both myopia and astigmatism improves simulated night driving vision more than PRK, according to a new study. Researchers in San Diego compared changes in simulated night driving performance among patients moderate to high myopia and astigmatism after treatment with either surgical implantation of a toric Visian Implantable Collamer Lens (STAAR Surgical; Monrovia, Calif.) or conventional PRK surgery.

Phakic IOLs: Why isn’t phakic IOL surgery more popular?

March 2, 2010

Phakic IOLs can correct high levels of refractive errors and produce excellent outcomes. So why isn’t phakic IOL surgery more popular? When phakic IOL surgery was first introduced in the United States several years ago, many eye doctors were excited about its prospects. The procedure can safely correct higher amounts of nearsightedness and farsightedness than LASIK and other corneal refractive procedures, often with better visual outcomes.

Toric phakic IOL successfully corrects high myopia and high astigmatism in Asian eyes

December 23, 2009

The Visian Toric Implantable Collamer Lens (STAAR Surgical, Monrovia, Calif.), a premium type of phakic IOL, safely and effectively corrects high myopia and high astigmatism in Asian eyes, according to researchers in Hong Kong.
Forty-four eyes of 29 Asian patients with between -6.00 and -18.25 diopters (D) of myopia and -1.00 to -4.50 D of astigmatism [Read More …]

Outcomes of Visian ICL and Verisyse Phakic IOL compared

September 9, 2009

In a study designed to compare the visual and refractive outcomes of the Visian ICL and Verisyse Phakic IOL refractive surgery procedures, researchers have found that both implantable lenses are effective in correcting moderate to large amounts of myopia, but the Visian ICL appears to produce better visual acuity.
