A single-use microkeratome with disposable components is safe and effective for creating flaps in thin-flap LASIK and is a viable alternative to femtosecond lasers for this purpose, Gustavo Tamayo, MD, told ophthalmologists gathered at the recent annual meeting of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS).

Refractive surgeons who are members of Review of Ophthalmology’s National Panel weighed in this month on their current preferences regarding LASIK surgery and what they are charging for the procedure. Of the 500 surgeons on the Panel, 31 responded to the survey.

More U.S. LASIK surgeons using femtosecond lasers

Two recent independent surveys suggest a continuing trend among U.S. refractive surgeons toward using femtosecond lasers rather than microkeratomes to create the corneal flap in LASIK surgery. The surveys were conducted separately by the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS) and the International Society of Refractive Surgery of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (ISRS/AAO).
